Kylie – The Interview – First World Exclusive Endemol/Southern Star Entertainment David Knight (DoP)
Being asked to record this interview was a privelige not only because Kylie was such a joy to work with but also because it was the first time, since her diagnosis of having cancer, that she had revealed her story in front of the cameras. Finding out how she managed her cancer was very humbling and left me with a true sense of her ‘real’ admirable qualities and of what is actually important in our lives

Atom is a documentary that explores the history and birth of atomic theory and practice. As such it was a production that took me to various locations around the UK and Europe. Most notable and enjoyable were the pieces to camera that I recorded with myself and the presenter in one ballon and the cameraman and director in another. Although hampered by fog, I was so impressed with my first balloon flight that I vowed to take it up as a sport...that is, until I found out how much it cost!

After filming both series of this production two major points stood out to me. One is that they were long jobs and there was a real feeling of unity amongst cast and crew which made the whole process very enjoyable especially when we all knew each other (crew) from previous jobs. The second point was that the cast were constantly set challenges, such as overcoming their fear of heights or spiders and as crew we were always being thrown into weird and wonderful scenarios that, in my case, allowed me to take advantage of one of my favoured methods of sound recording – wirelessly tranmitted sound from mixer to camera with backup courtesy of a separate sound system (e.g. MINIDISC,DAT etc). With this system in place, running around like a lunatic never felt so good!

This work was particularly enjoyable from the fact that the filming conditions were very challenging. We had to film in one of the smallest kitchens I have ever seen let alone worked in with lots of simultaneous action happening 360 degrees around us. Although filming followed an established series ‘format’ the sheer quantity of content meant that we were filming for long periods in a roasting kitchen during one of the hottest summers since 1954 with temperatures rising everywhere, not least of all Gordons!

Presented by Griff Rhys Jones these shoots were a welcome change in pace that provided lots of opportunity for me to record nice, long, considered pieces to camera from jibs and cranes in addition to the handheld camera work. Working both on land and water at a variety of interesting locations around the UK revealed a number of buildings, each with their own unique story and each requiring the public intervention in their continued maintenance/renovation.

Fully adept in various mono and stereo sound recording techniques and formats for voice and/or light instrumentation

Equally happy recording sound straight from mixer to camera (cabled) or with separate sound applications that involve transmitting the sound wirelessly from mixer to camera and backing up the sound on a hard format such as MiniDisc or DAT.

I’m most welcoming at being asked to advise for various filming scenarios and relish the opportunity to make sure that your production is obtaining the highest quality sound possible within the most affordable means relative to the budget.

I take a pride in my sound recording that is not only reflected in my work but also in the maintainence and ownership of my own sound equipment which is kept in impeccable order and serviced on a regular basis.

Comfortable and sensitive with all subject matter, people and genres, I enjoy filming in high energy, fast paced situations along with practices that require a more gentle and considered approach.

I’m adaptable and dependable in all climates and scenarios I have previously filmed in and very much eager to challenge both my mind and body in filming situations that I’ve yet to experience.

Interests
On the physical side I am a keen Surfer/Windsurfer, Mountain Biker. I am also interested in most forms of martial arts and how they can help you develop not only your body but your mind too. With this in mind and not surprisingly perhaps, I am also interested in Psychology/Philosophy/Sociology. In particular, the depth and breadth of the parameters of human experience in all its creative (and destructive for that matter) forms.
